Adjusting for Day light saving

As you will be aware by now we are getting daylight savings in Western Australia this weekend and this will affect your computer’s time.

It is important that the computer’s time is correct, particularly if you are operating a server, accounting package, or some other large business package.

Microsoft has released a patch which will automatically modify the time on your computers. This patch will need to be applied some time before 3 December, if possible, on all your computers.

It is located at:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=c6a2c8fe-abda-4051-a24f-3ec933089747&displaylang=en#filelist

At this location are 3 files to download. You need to download, and install, the first one, ie the (30K) i386 version.

The installation is really quick, and there is little feedback to tell you that its installed correctly. If you are not sure it does not really matter if it’s installed twice.

Now for some specifics:

  1. On your terminal server session. Do not install it from there. Install from the server console only. *****  This is important  ******* DO NOT INSTALL FROM THE TERMINAL SERVER SESSION.
  2. On your server. You will need to install it on the server console. You will probably need the administrator password for this.
  3. On your own Windows 2000 or XP PC on your desk. You will need to install this patch on all your local PCs. That is, outside your terminal server sessions. It may be worthwhile copying the patch to a CD or USB Stick and installing it from there if you have a lot of PCs to do.
  4. On your Windows 95 or Windows 98 PC on your desk. The patch will not work for these older PCs. You will need to manually change the time, by double clicking the clock in the bottom right corner.

It is important to set aside some time to update all your PCs at the same time (particularly if you are late and doing this after 3 December. On some systems you will not be able to log in if the difference in time between the local PC and the server is too great.

On the first working day after 3 December you will need to double check that all systems are showing the correct time, and manually alter it if it is wrong. You should also email me, and depending on your system, we may be able to get the time to automatically update from the internet.

Please note that we are asking for your assistance with this since we have too many clients to go around to all of you before 3 December. However, we are aware that some will prefer us to do this for you. Please email me asap if you require this to be done. You will understand that we will be billing appropriately for this work!

Double check on the clients if they have ticked "Autotmatically adjust clock for daylight saving changes" (double click on your time - bottom right conner of the desktop, click on Time Zone TAB) after applying this patch.
